Housing Points Database

The Housing Points Database is a spatial representation of residential structures and number of dwelling units. This is an updated version of the 2004 Housing data (portions of Winooski, Richmond, Hinesburg, and South Burlington were updated after the completion of the 2006 update for use in specific projects)

This data was developed for local and regional planning purposes only. This is an updated version of the 2004 CCRPC housing database. The following town’s housing points were updated between June 12 and September 15, 2006 (in the following order): Milton, Hinesburg, Colchester (originally started first), & Shelburne. The initial database was created in 2000 by mapping municipal grand list data. This was achieved by joining each town’s grand list to the municipal parcel GIS data and generating centroid point location for each parcel that has a residential structure. In cases where current grand list data did not have descriptive information on dwelling units, windshield surveys of selected new housing units were conducted (mostly in Burlington, Colchester, Shelburne, South Burlington and Williston). Recent updates have begun to reconcile housing point locations with structures visible on orthophotos, e911 point data, or other GPS-located building point data.

Supplemental Information

The major problem encountered during these updates was lack of data quality in the following areas: Grand List information, parcel polygon shapefiles (being outdated), commercial industrial information. There were several instances when it was impossible to join grand list information with the housing points database due to inconsistency in parcel ID numbers.

Housing Points 2011 Update Information

We are in the final stages of an update to the 2006 housing points data. This update used E911 points, grand list information, data from municipalities including assessor records, orthophotos, and other sources. While the earlier version of the housing points tended to have a single point in the center of a parcel, regardless of how many housing structures were on the parcel, the update more closely relates the housing/dwelling unit data to the E911 location of the structure(s). 2008 data from UVM showing the year built of housing structures was also integrated into the update. More recently built structures were given a year-built date based on orthophoto analysis or information from the municipality.
