This study evaluated Patchen Road from White Street to the Burlington City Line for options to increase safety and accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians along the corridor. The evaluation included: (1) collecting existing traffic, safety, and geometric data; (2) evaluating alternatives for improving bike/ped accommodations and reducing vehicle speeds in the short and long term; (3) determining preferred alternatives; and (4) public engagement.
This project was identified through South Burlington’s Traffic Evaluation Request Process where members of the public can submit transportation related concerns that are then evaluated and potentially considered for future design changes. Concerns expressed in the initial submission and at the subsequent neighborhood meeting included speeds of vehicles (previous data show an 85th percentile speed of 37mph on the 25mph road), narrow sidewalks directly adjacent to the curb and primarily on only one side of the road, a lack of designated bike lanes, and difficulty crossing at the intersection with White Street.

Patchen Road Scoping Study Open House & Public Meeting: Wednesday, April 16, 2025, 5-7pm, South Burlington Senior Center (180 Market St.) | Presentation »
This was the first of many opportunities to help City staff and project consultants understand how residents of South Burlington want to walk, bike, and roll along Patchen Road in South Burlington. This meeting was interactive and allowed for attendees to provide input on safety, accessibility, key destinations, and missing connections. An open house was held from 5-6pm, and the presentation began at 6pm.
Project Survey | (Closed) This survey was to help South Burlington and CCRPC better understand key issues related to driver speeds, and safety, accessibility, and connectivity for walking and biking on Patchen Road. Survey results will inform the planning team’s recommendations for corridor alternatives that aim to improve these conditions.
